South Sudanese president Salva Kiir on Tuesday resumed his tour of the greater Bahr al Ghazal region, where he assured citizens of his commitment to peace.
Kiir had to cut short his two weeks trip to Bahr al Ghazal in order to meet Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Juba on Monday.
The tripartite meetings in the capital Juba focused on economic cooperation and infrastructure as well as ways to advance regional integration.
Mayiik Ayii Deng, Minister in the Office of the President, said Kiir returned to the town of Wau this morning.” The president has just arrived in Wau and is going to attend a security meeting at the government secretariat here in Wau,” he said.
Mayiik further said President Kiir would address a public rally in Wau town before he travels to Kwajok, the capital of Gogrial state.
“The president will also disseminate peace there,” he said.
In September last year, Kiir and several opposition leaders, including Riek Machar, signed a power-sharing deal promising an end to the conflict that killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.
A new unity government is expected to assume power in May 2019 before elections three years later.
